1992! I was asked to paint the ceiling of Aidel's Cafe at 244 Haverstock Hill in London NW3. Little did I know what was in store for me, not just regarding the ceiling but the fun shenanigans embarked upon, usually involving alcohol. It was a pleasure painting that. I'm not sure if it's still there.
Some difficult tonal and textural challenges this week at Cafe Rust.
My January-March session is full. Let me know if you'd like to sign up for the post-Easter series of sessions. Space is limited.
It's week 5 next where we will be focusing on portraiture. I'll be giving a tour of the head using our model and describing general rules for sizing and proportion basic to all heads. Then we'll get on with our own version of our portrait model observing our ideas and seeing if they fit in this particular case. I have a great model lined up just for this purpose.
So far in this tutored series we have been making drawings about the perception of space and the placement of the figure in differing contexts whilst still being conscious of tone and proportion.
I shall be starting a ten week run at Cafe Rust on the 12 January 7.30-9.30pm. These sessions are for all levels, beginners to accomplished. I shall be introducing some key drawing ideas to the small group and giving you an opportunity to extend and develop your ability no matter your level.
As usual I have a great array of Brighton's top models posing for us. The cost for all ten sessions is just £95. Please register with me in advance as numbers are limited. This price includes me, the models and basic materials (not paper or boards).
Cafe Rust is on Preston Street near the viaduct. It is, I think a great setting for these sessions with quirky props and distressed walls that provide interest and character.
The group will be fairly small and welcoming

A fantastic evening of live classical guitar, gutsy flamenco poses, pure drawing concentration, vino tinto and tortilla. Thank you everybody who came and crammed Sussex County Arts Club, the brilliant models and especially Jason Little, guitarist extraordinario who played for about 80 minutes!
Phil is an inspirational teacher, I know. Now he's written it down, working from the nude, in a book. How good is that? Well, it's very good actually for anyone interested in depicting the figure in all the many fascinating ways we can try to do that. And I am in it too! Thank you Phil.
Pre-order now for 23 November from Amazon or look out for it in the bookstores.
A Spanish Theme is an evening of life drawing with a Spanish flavour, of course! It will be on Saturday 21st November from 7.30- 10.30pm. Our first flamenco dancer will strike a number of sequential poses over time stopping to allow you to draw. The shapes, the silhouettes and attitude being flamencesque. She will be backed by a live classical Spanish guitar playing a beguiling mix of tangos, solea and fandango. Our longer set pose, backed by great Spanish music, through the middle section of the evening, will be a chance to spend time making one sustained piece of work from a dynamic, colourful set-up The final section will be a revisit where another dancer will be showing more shapes, more beautiful lines and more great silhouettes.
Space at Sussex County Arts Club is limited so please book early. Tickets for the event are £15 which will include a glass of red
