I was in Landscape Artist of the Year in 2021 on Sky Arts. I didn’t win it but it was a useful experience from a painting point of view. I’ve had a few conversations with painters asking me if I thought they should do this show. I always say yes! Do it! Do not hesitate.
I would recommend it to anybody who wants to focus their minds on their own painting process and how they make their work. I did it for that reason, to discover how I would react under pressure and to see what I ended up with and what I thought about it.
At the time I felt I needed to put myself into a tricky spot as it makes you do things you might not normally do. I occasionally need to do that as part of the painting and drawing process as itˋs always useful and interesting one way or another.
I noticed someone has posted the whole episode I was in onto YouTube.
Have a look if you can. If you have any thoughts about the programme, the paintings, painting processes, my approach, the location etc Ìd love to hear them.
Quotes from the show about my painting submission in order to get picked to go on the programme…
“There are moments of real genius. That water is totally believable even though a lot of the rest of the representation is stylised. A beautiful painting”.
Kathleen Soriano
